Board Meeting Recap – March 20, 2013

Hello All,

With the lion’s share of staff time being devoted to finalizing next fiscal year’s budget, we had another light agenda for the board meeting.  I expect the agendas to start picking up again at the next meeting (April 2nd) when the FY 2014 budget will be discussed and voted on.

No new business was introduced this time, however we did have some interesting items on the consent agenda.  First was a final ordinance approving a new official zoning map for the Village which reflects the reforms put in place to help Old Town residents complete home improvements with an easier and faster permit process.

The second item was a new contract for park grounds maintenance with Ryco Landscaping.  This contract allows existing village staff to concentrate their efforts in other areas besides basic park maintenance.  The cost was slightly higher than last year but it also includes new services like mulch distribution around our parks.  Ryco was the lowest cost for the service which attracted 11 other bidders.  Prices ranged from $40,756 (Ryco) all the way up to $184,140, so I’m satisfied that village staff did their due diligence in ensuring they got the best price for the residents.

Other than the consent agenda, Mike Angus from the mountain biking group CAMBr (http://cambr.org/SMF/index.php?action=home) gave an excellent update on how the group intends to utilize their membership and corporate sponsorship to create world class mountain biking within the village’s underutilized Keith Andres Park.  I have a video with more information posted further down the website if you are interested in more details.

After the presentation and the various Commission and Trustee Reports, we adjourned to executive session for an hour and then ended the meeting.

It’s hard to believe I’m already coming to the end of my appointed term.  I have learned and contributed more than I thought possible over the last 5 months and look forward to election night when I will know if I can continue this fantastic opportunity to serve the community for another four years.

Have a great week.

Kevin
