Audit & Finance Committee Meeting Recap – February 13, 2013

Hi Everyone,

It is budget season for the Village, which means the Audit & Finance meetings carry extra importance as all of the departments give presentations regarding the status of projects/initiatives from the previous fiscal year, the upcoming fiscal year as well as discuss the items and projects they would like to add to the existing budget.

Although not a voting member of the Audit & Finance Committee (soon, I hope), I do attend in my capacity as Trustee.  The meetings are extremely informative.  They are also open to the public, and I invite every resident to attend.

Departments that gave presentations tonight included:

  • Finance
  • Information Technology
  • Community Development including Engineering
  • Planning and Zoning
  • MFT
  • Stormwater Detention
  • Capital Projects

Of note was discussion on the Rt. 31/Huntley Rd. improvements, which will be extremely expensive due to the restrictive geography of that intersection.  Anyone attempting to climb that hill during a snowstorm can attest to that.

The Maple Avenue improvements were also front and center, along with Carpenter Creek which will be significantly improved to prevent runoff from flooding Maple Ave. and nearby residents homes.  This should lower their homeowners insurance by a substantial amount.

I was pleased to see capital improvements at the front and center of budget discussions.  Staff appears to be on the same page in this regard.

There was also discussion on one of my initiatives – the livestreaming of board meetings online as well as the posting of previous board meetings on the Village website.  I have another post that goes into much more detail on this subject.  The vote on this subject will be held at the next board meeting and I really hope it passes.

It was a long meeting but that was an indication of how productive it was.

Have a great weekend,

Kevin
